Even in the depths of Winter, Northern Michigan has so much to offer
Entering February is entering the heart of winter. Cold days with snow abound. Though the days are slowly getting lighter, we are far from sunny summer days. For some it is a time of hibernation and reflection. Sitting on the couch and gazing out on a snowy landscape while reading a book or binge watching your favorite TV series sounds ideal for some. For others, it is a time for enjoying the countless entertainments that Northern Michigan provides. Whether you prefer to find fun outside or inside, there is something for everyone in NoMi.
Skiing and snowshoeing have been longtime favorites of many in the region. There are a handful of downhill ski resorts within a few hours drive around the region. For downhill adventures, I love Crystal Mountain in Thompsonville. You can rent ski and snowboard equipment on site, and the numerous runs provide fun for any skill level. For the cross-country ski enthusiasts, try the Vasa Pathway in Traverse City provides excellent conditions for both classic and skate skiing with 13 miles of groomed trails.
If you love snowshoeing, beautiful views, and a tasty beverage, you can try snowshoeing at Brys Estates on the Old Mission Peninsula. There are two winter trails that you can take which showcase the beauty of the pastoral landscape. Stop by and warm up at the firepit and have a mug of spiced apple cider or wine after you are done.
If being out in the great outdoors in the winter is not your thing, there are plenty of ideas to keep you indoors during the winter months too.
The Den at The Grand Traverse Resort and Spa in Williamsburg provides hours of indoor entertainment. Try your hand at axe throwing, or mini bowling, or even an arcade game. There are plenty of food and beverages options so The Den is the perfect place to reconnect with friends.
There are plenty of warming igloos that pop up around the area too. At Hop Lot in Suttons Bay, you and a few friends can enjoy craft beer and delicious bbq under tall trees. A blazing fire pit is always going to warm yourself at this open-air beer garden loved by locals and tourists alike.
For those who are culinary minded, Traverse City Restaurant Week is February 20th through the 26th. Restaurants all across the city are offering three course meals for amazing prices. Go back and support your favorite restaurant, or try something new!
Northern Michigan provides many other conventional and creative wintertime activities- ice fishing, snowmobiling, curling, museums, day spas, movie nights, hiking trails and more. If you are tired of watching the snow from the comfort of your own home, I highly recommend venturing out and discovering the many wintertime wonders up North.
