"And all at once, summer collapsed into fall." - Oscar Wilde

As late summer carries on, one notices the sun starts to hang just a little lower in the sky noting the inevitable upcoming change in the seasons. There is a bittersweet sadness that creeps in for a brief moment as the realization that the days of sunshine and warmth will be making its way for the cooler months ahead. Yet, at the same time, there is an excitement in the air for all things that autumn has to offer. There may be cooler, rainy days ahead, but there still is so much fun to be had from September through November. Pumpkin patches, seasonal treats, and the vibrant hues of the trees are just a few ways that Northern Michigan Falls are always spectacular.

The reds, oranges, and yellows of the trees overhead hiking the Old Mission Lighthouse Trails are always awe inspiring. Driving back down the Old Mission Peninsula, the fall color tour continues to wow at every turn with East or West bay as a breathtaking backdrop.

A classic fall activity is venturing out to a pumpkin patch and trying one’s luck at a corn maze.

Gallagher’s Farm is the perfect spot to find a pumpkin, find your way through a corn maze, and grab a hot cider and donut. Their great seasonal produce and pies are perfect to pick up to enjoy later.

Another great tradition that will resume in 2022 is the Mac & Cheese & Wine Fest. This culinary event that falls on the weekend of Thanksgiving on the Old Mission Peninsula. Benefiting a local charity, you can drive from winery to winery enjoying a taste of wine paired with local restaurant’s Mac & Cheese creations. Sometimes it is a classic take on the beloved dish, other times it's Lobster Mac & Cheese, or even Tiramisu inspired. Vote for the best at the end of your culinary journey.

One of the greatest things about the Up North dining is that they have been doing farm-to-table long before it was a trend. That is because this region is an agricultural area and harvest time is the perfect time to rediscover fall favorites. If you are eating at a local restaurant, chances are they are working with local farms to highlight the best dishes that accompany the season.

While there are plenty of nights where you can sit around the campfire and admire the stars above, finding your way indoors with friends is also a good time. Try The Parlor in Traverse City for great cocktails and mocktails that pairs wonderfully with great conversation.

Autumn in Northern Michigan delivers endless opportunities to experience the season. From fun runs, to Oktoberfests, to hayrides and more, memories are ready to be made this fall. So, get on your bike, get in your car, or lace up those hiking boots.

The cool-crisp mornings make way to warm afternoons, the foliage ignites with color, fire pits are better with blankets and hot apple cider. Whatever is your favorite part of the season, embrace it. Fall awaits!

About Me

20210906_162453.jpg

Hi! I’m Kristin, the C.E.Ope! of Discover Your Northern Michigan. Growing up in Traverse City I know first hand how special Northern Michigan is. When I moved away so many people would ask me where to eat, play, and stay in NoMi. I started a list chock full of recommendations that I would email to curious minds. Over the years I kept adding to that list every time I found a new restaurant I fell in love with, or an adventure that I couldn’t wait to come back to. Pretty soon that email became a bit overwhelming. So, I decided to put all my recs online and let my words and pictures guide folks to discover their own Northern Michigan adventures. And here we are today. Great to have you here!
