Fresh. Local. Seasonal. See what the farmers of the Old Mission Peninsula have available from spring to fall.
Driving along the 19 miles of the picturesque Old Mission Peninsula, you will notice the vivid blue water of the bays, stunning vistas, and sprawling bucolic farm lands. Agriculture is at the heart of the Peninsula, and has been for well over 150 years. Accompanying many of these farms are their own stands with fresh picked goodies from April through November.
“Agriculture is at the heart of the Peninsula, and has been for well over 150 years.”
It is no surprise that the Old Mission Peninsula is perfect for agriculture. With abundant sunny hillsides, two bays that keep the temperatures moderate, and dependable seasons, crops of all kinds are grown on this stretch of land. Most notably- cherries, which the region is known for, but apple and hop farming is on the rise. Throw a stone and you can also hit a winery. Many grape varietals thrive here too. Farmers also take advantage of the environment by growing everyday food staples as well.
The farm Stand's selection change as the seasons march forward. Asparagus in the spring, followed by fruits in the summer, to a harvest’s bounty of tomatoes, corn, gourds and more in the late summer and into the fall. Each farm stand along the way offers their own variation of the seasonal produce grown with care.
Produce is not all that you will find on display at the stands. Oftentimes you will find eggs, jams, syrups, pies, and bouquets side-by-side with peppers and cucumbers. The handcrafted teas and lavender sachets are always great to give as gifts or to keep as souvenirs of your trip Up North.
The prices are responsible- on par, or sometimes even less than you will find at your local grocery store. Most of the farm stands are self-serve, so you either have to have exact change, or, in some cases, if you need to break a Twenty, there is a change box in which you can do so. The honor system is king out on the OMP.
Whether you are an inspiring chef or just like clean eating, searching out locally sourced, quality fresh food is always an adventure.
